Testimonials

I was a 70 year old first-time backpacker in 2016. Two of my family were first-timers as well. I trained for a month or so in front of the trip but believe I could have done more to prepare. The hiking was difficult…but very enjoyable. The Wind River trail was fantastic primarily because I was with my family. I also enjoyed the raw natural beauty of that part of the Rockies. I have fond memories of Hobbs and Seneca Lakes. We were fortunate to have Matt Potts as our guide. He helped us prepare by providing an advanced list of needed supplies and advice for physical conditioning. He had a good inventory of extra supplies and provided us with all we needed. He checked in on all of us multiple times per day, and was just a great leader. Here’s the bottom line about Matt: he knows everything about being on the “trail” and everything about setting up and maintaining a campsite. He was prepared and helped us make our trip safe and enjoyable.

First of all, I want to thank Matt from the bottom of my heart for making my dreams come true. Now I can proudly say I have done backpacking in the wilderness. Did I tell you I have checked off one more item from my bucket list? Thanks to Matt’s guidance and encouragement, the backpacking venture turned out to be an enjoyable outing in the wilderness. I learned some powerful life lessons from this trip too. I cannot forget what one of our members said when I was trying to avoid the slushy trails because of the recent snow. “I don’t want to be frowned upon for creating another trail” and he continued to walk on those slushy trails. Yes, I followed these gentlemen. The trip was indeed an eye opener for me. I learned to eat to live rather than the other way around. If anyone wants a lesson on how to coexist with nature you must try out one of these backpacking trips. These trips motivate me to stay in shape so I can go on another trip. Matt, count on me on your next trip to wherever in the Wilderness.

My trip back packing with my dad, Matt Potts, in August 2015 was incredible. The memories from this trip will resonate with me the rest of my life. Being surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains for 3 days allowed me to let go of the outside world and enjoy the camaraderie of others, satisfaction of accomplishing a physically straining hike through the mountains, and quality time reflecting on life. I feel the lessons I learned from back packing immediately helped me improve how I treat others, my respect for the outdoors, and gave me tools I will use as I grow as a man. Words cannot describe the feeling of star gazing on a perfectly clear night with no city lights to disrupt the view, a warm, crackling fire waking you in the morning, and glowing embers as you go to bed, and the sensation of patiently waiting until a fish nibbles at your bait and the joy of reeling it in(oh, and not to mention putting garlic and butter on your catch to roast on the campfire for dinner.) Thank you Dad for taking me on this amazing adventure, I hope that everyone else who signs up benefits more than I have!
